To check illegal mining, Odisha plans village level volunteer groups
The Odisha government will soon have village level volunteer groups to check illegal mining. State chief secretary GC Pati has directed the steel and mines department to develop a community-based localised system to check illegal mining.
Pati, while reviewing the revenue collection position as on August 2014, was apprised that the collection of royalty from major minerals is not improving due to illegal mining.
The chief secretary also advised the steel and mines department to settle royalty disputes through mutual and bilateral discussions instead of going to court.
The state recorded growth of 10.19% in its own tax revenue collection by the end of August 2014 as against the same period last year. There has been 21.68% increase in professional tax over last year’s collection of R56.44 crore. Land revenue collection has increased by 18.6% over last year’s collection of R119.97 crore during this time, the review meeting was told by state additional chief secretary(finance) Upendra Nath Behera.
Revenue collection from vehicles, excise and electricity duties has also increased by 23.88%, 25.5% and 22.47%, respectively, in the same period.
However, the collection from stamps, registration and other taxes till the end of August has failed to reach the previous year’s collection in the same period.
Behera, while presenting the updated position, outlined the measures taken by the government for improved revenue collection.
