Steel and rail forging close bond
RINL AND INDIAN RAILWAYS SIGN AGREEMENT FOR SETTING UP FORGED WHEEL FACTORY AT RAE BARELI
India’s largest Forged Wheel Plant projects ‘Agreements’ has got signed between Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) and Indian Railways in the presence of Hon’ble Union Minister of Steel, Shri Beni Prasad Verma and Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi. Sri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Minister of State for Railways, was also present on this occasion.
Congratulating, both RINL and Indian Railways, Hon’ble Minister of Steel said, “These Agreements will start a new chapter of cooperation between Indian Steel Industry and the Railways.” He further added that RINL and Indian Railways will mutually be benefited from these ‘Assured Off-take’ Agreements along with ‘Land lease’ Agreement. This initiative of Ministry of Steel will add pace to industrial development in Uttar Pradesh and will go a long way in accelerating the pace of economic development.
Hon’ble Railway Minister, complimented Sri Beni Prasad Verma for the initiatives of Ministry of Steel for development of steel industry in India and for strengthening the cooperation between both the Ministries. He advised RINL, Visakhapatnam to complete the project timely so that the requirement of wheels for Indian Railways is met indigenously.
Sri AP Choudhary, CMD, RINL while welcoming the dignitaries, mentioned that the project was already frozen and process of order placement is in the advance stage. The global technology/ equipment suppliers from Germany, Russia, China, along with reputed Indian agencies are participating in the bidding process. The quality of wheels manufactured in the plant will be tested and certified by International certifying agency “TTCI”, USA. Land has also been identified and preliminary site activities have commenced.
The Forged Wheel Plant at Lalganj, Raebareli, will be set up near the Rail Coach Factory in Uttar Pradesh and will produce 1 lakh Forged Wheels per annum in the first phase for ‘Locos and High speed trains’ with an investment of about Rs. 1100 crores. The capacity of the plant will be doubled in the second phase for a production of over 2 lakh wheels per annum.
The Factory will become operational in 36 months from the order placement date and will provide employment to about 500 to 600 people. The unit will have an added locational advantage due to its proximity with the Rail Coach Factory, Raebareli. RINL will supply Steel Cast Rounds to the Wheel Plant from its state of the art new Caster being installed with German technology at its unit at Visakhapatnam.
Sri G Mohan Kumar, IAS, Secretary (Steel) and Sri Arunendra Kumar, Chairman, Railway Board, also spoke on the national significance of import substitution project. Members of the Railway Board, senior officials of Ministry of Steel & Ministry of Railways, Directors of RINL, were also present during the signing of the Agreements. Sri P Madhusudan, Director (Finance), RINL thanked the dignitaries for making the function success.
RINL ACHIEVES IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE DURING FIRST HALF OF CURRENT FISCAL
On Sales, RINL has recorded a growth of 16% with total sales volume of 1.3 million tons during first half of the year. Market continued to be sluggish during the current year, affecting sales realization, however, with higher sales volume, RINL could surpass the CPLY performance in turnover on its sales of Rs 5,789 crores. The exports in H1 was highest since inception at Rs 348 crores, a growth of 63% over CPLY. The Company has taken advantage of depreciation of Rupee by maximizing exports and similar efforts are on to maximize exports during H2 also. The Special Steel sales and Wire Rod sales grew by 16% and 63% respectively compared to CPLY. Seven new branches are also getting stabilized to strengthen marketing network in different regions of the country.
Under expansion Sinter Plant-3 got commenced in current year and started producing Sinter and with this, Blast Furnace-3, which was commissioned last year, will reach to rated capacity within few months. The commissioning of new Steel Melt Shop (SMS) has already commenced and heats were planned from October ’13.
To meet the additional requirement of power generation, RINL has maximized its captive power generation by achieving a growth of 9% during H1. The new units of 67.5 MW using Blast Furnace Gas & partly coal and 20.6 MW using only Waste Heat from Sinter Plant are due to be put in operation in 3rd quarter. The Company has planted about one lakh trees during the current year and planned for similar number in the second half of the year.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the state run second largest steel maker, has bagged the prestigious “Rajbhasha Shield” for effective implementation of official language in the organization.
His-Excellency, the President of India, Sri Pranab Mukherjee, presented the “Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Shield” to Sri AP Choudhary, CMD, RINL, at a glittering function held in New Delhi on the occasion of Hindi Day Celebrations.
His-Excellency the President of India, Sri Pranab Mukherjee, also presented another shield for the second best House Magazine in Hindi, 'Sugandh,' to RINL. Sri YR Reddy, Director (Personnel) RINL received the award from Sri Pranab Mukherjee.
For best Hindi article in Non-Hindi Regions, second prize was awarded in the same function by First Citizen of India to Smt V Suguna, Asst.Mgr. (Hindi), RINL. This award consists of Cash prize and appreciation letter.

This is the sixth year in a row when RINL was adjudged best Official Language Implementer in 'C' Region and second year in a row when 'Sugandh' was recognized at National level. This is the first time the Ministry has initiated the award scheme to recognize authors contributing Hindi articles in various Magazines and the very first time the award goes to Hindi Cell Official of RINL.
This award function was attended by Sri Y Balaji, DGM (Personnel), Sri Lalan Kumar, AGM (Marketing) and officials of RINL Delhi Office.
