Deora flags-off first ever inter-city CNG car rally
A first-of-its-kind intercity awareness drive to popularise CNG as a clean fuel in India for vehicles was recently flagged-off by Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora.
The “NGV India 2010 CNG Eco Drive” comprised a fleet of 40 CNG vehicles, which travelled from Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai via Panvel to Chinchwad in Pune.
Flagging off the drive, Deora said, “CNG is becoming a preferred option as vehicular fuel in metro cities. In Mumbai, the popularity of Piped Natural Gas is gaining momentum and I am confident that very soon the entire length and breadth of the city will be covered with network of piped natural gas as cooking fuel. Like Delhi, the positive impact of adopting CNG for vehicles has yielded excellent results in containing pollution. It is our endeavour to make CNG available across India.”
In his introductory address, BC Tripathi, CMD GAIL said, “We at GAIL are setting up a green corridor across the country. The new pipeline which GAIL is laying from Dabhol to Goa will supply large volume of gas to feed the city of Mumbai. In fact, with several CNG stations across states we can now drive a CNG vehicle from Mumbai to several places without worrying about refueling.”
Fuel filling for all the vehicles was provided by Mahanagar Gas Limited. The drive navigated through Sion, Chembur, Vashi, Palm Beach Road, Belapur, Panvel (NH4) and Khalapur. The vehicles briefly halted for refueling at the GAIL Gas CNG station at Panvel before proceeding to Pune via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The event concluded at the CNG mother station of Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd. (MNGL) in Chinchwad – Chikali, Pune.
The Eco Drive was sponsored by GAIL Gas Ltd, MGL, Everest Kanto Cylinder, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, Nitin Cylinders, Aavantika Gas Ltd, Bhagyanagar Gas Ltd, Central Uttar Pradesh Gas Ltd and MNGL.
This Eco Drive is expected to further popularize the use of CNG as a transport fuel in cities and also help to promote its usage along the highway. The CNG Eco Drive is a precursor to the NGV 2010 Conference and Exhibition to be held in Mumbai from 24 to 26 November 2010.
NGV is the world’s largest Exhibition and Conference and NGV India 2010 in Mumbai is expected to be the biggest among these.
