Hundreds of runners from all walks of life, from schoolchildren to octogenarians, with messages for peace scrolled on their white T-shirts holding peace flags, participated in Jharsuguda’s first celebratory peace run organised by Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) in association with the Junior Chambers International (JCI) to commemorate the occasion of the World Peace Day celebrated on Monday.

As dawn lit up the Manmohan ME School ground, runners posed for pictures with the victory sign. Nearly 300 students from major schools of Jharsuguda town sporting their uniform looked like a carnival.

Welcoming the participants senior VP of VAL RK Singh said, “Peace is a word that seems to have been forgotten long. In such testing times, it is very important to show solidarity with the person next to you, in front of you and behind you — regardless of race, caste, creed, religion or anything.

The sheer enthusiasm shown by people of Jharsuguda for this single cause is an indication to this”.

Addressing the opening ceremony, MP (Rajya Sabha) Kishore Mohanty said, “Vedanta and JCI have taken a great initiative in organising this peace run. We are all peace loving people and such endeavours will send strong messages everywhere in the State.”
The peace run jointly flagged off by Kishore Mohanty and RK Singh was cheered by thousands of bystanders standing on both sides of the route. Even policemen joined the enthusiastic cheering. The 3.2-km peace run ended near Kali Mandir with Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogan echoing loud among the students.
