Coal India output up 5.7% in April
The offtake in the first month of the new financial year increased to 39.81 MT from 37.76 MT in April 2012-13
State-owned Maharatna Coal India has started the new fiscal on a positive note by completing the production and distribution targets for April, Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said. The company achieved production of 35.75 million tonnes in April this fiscal, an increase of 5.7 % from the same period previous fiscal, he added.
The offtake in April was at 39.81 million tonnes for April 2013 which stood at 37.76 million tonnes in April last year, Jaiswal said. This is despite the fact that some state power utilities have not taken further supplies of coal as they have abundant stocks with them, he added.
The supply of coal to power utilities during April this fiscal was 29.55 million tonnes against 26.82 million tonnes supplied in same month last fiscal, registering a growth of 10.2%, Jaiswal said.
CIL which accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production, loaded an average of 201 rakes per day during April, against a loading of 181.5 rakes / day in the same month last year, he added.
The growth in coal loading during the month has been 10.7 %, Jaiswal said. “This is a positive beginning of the fiscal year for this Maharatna...,” he added.
Beginning the new financial year on a positive note, Coal India has reported 5.73 % jump in production for April against the same month previous year. The production stood at 35.75 million tonnes against 33.81 million tonnes and the offtake at 39.89 million tonnes (37.76 mt).
“This was despite the fact that several state power utilities did not accept their committed quantity of coal as they were flush with coal at their plants. They have specifically requested CIL not to affect further supplies as their plants were replete with stocks,” the Coal Ministry said in a statement.
Interestingly, coal offtake was 4.14 million tonnes more than the actual production, which means the entire additional supply came from the liquidation of the ground stock. CIL began 2013-14 with a pithead stock of 57.86 million tonnes which stood at 53.72 million tonnes at the close of the month. Coal supply to power utilities stood at 29.55 million tonnes (26.82 mt), a growth of 10.2%.
Coal India loaded an average of 201 rakes per day during the month against 181.5 rakes a day in April last year, up 10.7%.
