India gets big response at USIBC meet
The US-India Business Council is the principal interlocutor for industry operating in the US and Indian marketplace
India has drawn a huge response at the US India Business Council (USBIC) annual meeting for the possible tie-ups in the coal sector.
A high-level delegation, led by Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, attended the roundtable conference held in Washington in June.
The delegation, consisting of additional coal secretary Alok Perti, adviser to Coal Ministry PR Mandal and Coal India chairman Partha S Bhattacharyya and other officials, met with industry leaders such as Caterpillar, Patriot Coal, Chervon, Massey Energy and AES.
The welcome address was given by Ron Somers, USIBC President.
Speaking on the occasion, Coal Minister Jaiswal said: The United States and India, as the world’s largest consumers of energy, share common interests and responsibilities to ensure energy security and face common challenges. Even though, US produces more coal than India, the country still faces acute shortage of coal to fulfill its present needs and future demands.”
Although, international energy prices have fluctuated greatly over the past several years, using market mechanisms to meet future energy needs is still the primary and best choice for our two countries.
According to him, India is sitting on rich mineral resources. In order to supply coal in rich quantity to the power companies in the country, we have decided to source coal from countries like US, Australia and Indonesia. Both countries recognize that energy conservation and increasing energy efficiency are essential to achieve sustainable development and can greatly contribute to solving the challenges of energy security, climate change and environmental protection, he said.
CIL Chairman also made presentations during the conference.
