Coal India has been conferred with the “World’s Largest Coal Producing Company” award at the first Dalal Street Investment Journal PSU Awards 2009. The award was accepted by Partha S Bhattacharyya, chairman, Coal India from Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The award has been conferred on Coal India as it is the single largest coal producing company in the world. Coal India produced 379.49 million tonnes of Coal during the year 2007-08 and is likely to achieve a target of 405 million tonnes of coal during the current year.

Speaking on the occasion Bhattacharyya said, “We are not only the largest coal producing company in the world, but play a vital role in India’s energy scenario. Coal India produces 84 per cent of India’s overall coal production and meets 46 per cent of country’s primary commercial energy requirement.”

Moreover, Coal India offers coal at deeply discounted prices, which is as low as 50-55 per cent as compared to international prices, even today, amidst the global meltdown, he added.
Coal India plays an extremely important and a strategic role in making Indian industry globally competitive. The benefit is generated without creating any burden on Government of India or on the company, he added. CIL is a key driver of economic growth, a catalyst for industrial sustenance and growth in India.
