The 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS), which is the country's largest underground operating hydro power station, has surpassed its previous best record of generation i.e. 7018.8 MUs which was achieved during the financial year 2009-10. This record has been created by the Project despite the setbacks suffered by it on account of unprecedented rains in the catchments of river Satluj in the month of July and August leading to considerable increase in silt load thus forcing the shut down of plant for 22 days during current financial year.

RP Singh, CMD SJVN Ltd, a joint venture of Govt of India and Govt of Himachal Pradesh, informed that last year, the project was able to generate 7018.8 million units in the entire financial year whereas this year, this achievement has been done on 20th March, 2011 wherein 11 days of the current financial year are still remaining and it is expected that project will be able to set a new record of producing more than 7,100 million units

During the current financial year, the project has not only achieved the Design Energy but also the Excellent Rating target fixed by Ministry of Power, Govt of India.

This has benefited all the beneficiary states of Northern India including Himachal Pradesh which has more than 1/3rd stakes in the project being a joint venture partner with Govt of India.
