B Surender Mohan takes over as NLC CMD
Prior to his new role, 56–year–old Mohan was serving as the Mines Director
B Surender Mohan recently assumed office as chairman & managing director of Neyveli Lignite Corporation on July 1. Prior to this, he was holding the post of director (mines) of the same organisation from May 1, 2008.
Mohan, a 56-year-old mining graduate, with more than three decades of experience in the mining industry, passed out from Osmania University, Hyderabad in 1977. He holds first class manager certificate of competency awarded by the directorate general of mines safety, Dhanbad and is a post-graduate diploma holder in business administration.
He started his career in Rourkela Steel Plant, a PSU under Steel Authority of India Ltd, and worked in the mechanised captive iron ore mine at Odisha. Later, he moved to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant wherein he worked in the fully mechanised opencast captive dolomite and limestone mines in the Khamman and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh.
He joined NLC as deputy general manager and was subsequently elevated to general manager. In NLC, he headed various divisions. He was promoted as chief general manager in August 2003 and worked as unit head of mine-I & IA. During this tenure, both the mines have exceeded the installed capacity of 10.5 million tonnes of lignite per annum (MTPA) and 3.0 MTPA respectively. As CGM, he looked after the areas of mine planning, specialised mining equipment and coordination (mines) which includes the implementation of Barsingsar Lignite Mine, operating mines at Neyveli and new projects.
In May 2008, he was elevated to the post of Director(Mines) in NLC. After taking over as Director, the performance of Mines are consistently in the growth path and every year the previous records were broken by creating new records and paved way to the Power Stations to create new records in the Power Generation.
Under his efficient leadership, the Mine-II Expansion Project (10.5 MTPA to 15 MTPA) was completed without cost overrun. To honour this, the Construction Industry Development Council, New Delhi, a professional body established by Planning Commission, Government of India, presented Vishwakarma Award (Achievement Award for Best Project under Mining Domain) to NLC. Barsingsar Lignite Mine Project (2.1 MTPA) was the other project which was completed without cost overrun during his tenure as Director (Mines).
He has received ‘Excellence Award’ from the ‘Indian Mineral Industry Journal’ for his performance in NLC during 2009-10. He has bagged the ‘Best Corporate Director Management Excellence Award’ for the year 2011-12 instituted by the same Journal for his significant contribution in Lignite scenario of India. ‘The Indian Mining and Engineering Journal’ has conferred the ‘IME Journal Golden Jubilee Award’ to him on 04.05.2012 for providing valuable service in the Mining Industry.
He is a Life member of Mining Engineers Association of India & Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India). He was a Member of Mining Engineering Division Board, Institution of Engineers (India). He was also the Chariman of Institution of Engineers (India), Neyveli chapter during the period 2008-2010. He has also, held the position of Chairman of Tamilnadu & Kerala Mines Safety Association.
