SAIL steel to be used again for Mahakumbh 2013
There is a little bit of SAIL in everybody’s life, says SAIL’s tagline. And an example in case is the recent order deliveries by SAIL, for different constructions for Mahakumbh-2013. The historical fair is held every 12 years, and is arguably the world’s largest congregation of devotees. Considering the scale of event, preparations have already begun and SAIL has supplied steel from its different plants spread across the country. SAIL will be supplying nearly 10,000 tonnes of chequered plates, and structurals which will be used in temporary pontoon bridges, pathways, floors and constructions at ghats.
SAIL is well positioned to meet the wide-ranging steel requirement for the Kumbh Mela, as its integrated steel plants spread across the country, produce widest variety of steel products in India. The plants have gone the extra mile by making special efforts to customize the products as per the requirements and deliver them well in time.
SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is supplying chequered plates of special sizes which will be used for constructing temporary bridges, pathways & floors after necessary fabrication during the Mela. RSP bagged the order for supplying chequered plates in 6 x 1000 x 5000 mm thickness, which is not a regular size. For meeting the deadline, the slabs of required size are being made in the Continuous Casting Machine Shops and special chequered campaign rolling is also being undertaken at Hot Strip Mill. At RSP, normally the weight of a chequered coil is kept at 16 Tonnes for logistics. Here again, special provision has been made to produce coils with 13 tonne weight so as to match the specifications.
For making pontoon bridges, SAIL has also supplied plates and structurals from SAIL’s others plants BSL(Bokaro), BSP(Bhilai), DSP(Durgapur) and ISP (Burnpur) to Public Works Department (PWD) of Uttar Pradesh. Each pontoon consumes approximately 5.5 Tonne of steel.
