Maharatna company Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has entered into a fresh phase of its expansion plan, with many new units either nearing completion, or getting commissioned in the recent past.

“SAIL is geared towards meeting its modernisation and expansion targets, and we are optimistic that our investments will translate into tangible results by the end of next year”, says Chairman CS Verma about the biggest M&E plans embarked upon by the company ever since inception. The modernisation and expansion programme of SAIL is being carried out with an estimated investment of Rs 72,000 crores, which aims to enhance crude steel capacity from the current level of 12.8 Mtpa to 21.40 Mtpa by 2013.

Coke making facilities have received a major fillip in the expansion programme of the company. On July 28, 2012, heating of the new 0.768 Mtpa Coke Oven Battery (COB)#6 was commenced at Rourkela Steel Plant. Earlier at IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur, similar facilities for coke making were started in May 2012 with the heating of new Coke Oven Battery # 11 which has a capacity of 0.88 Mtpa. Both of the latest Coke Oven Batteries to join the SAIL fold comply fully with the latest norms of Central Pollution Control Board. Keeping in view the growing energy scarcity in the country, these batteries have also been designed for maximum energy efficiency. They are equipped with coke dry cooling facility, which not only yields better coke, but also recover around 80% of the sensible heat of the coke. Cumulative investment in these two projects have been to the tune of Rs910 crores. Many more projects under the expansion scheme, from coke and iron making to finished steel production, are in advanced stages of completion.

The cumulative expenditure incurred so far on the modernisation and expansion programme of SAIL is about Rs37,000 crore including Rs11,000 crore for the financial year 2011-12. For the current year 2012-13, the expenditure is expected to be around Rs12,000 crore against which around Rs2,000 crore have already been spent till June 2012.

Production at SAIL expands 6 % in July

Crude steel and saleable steel production at 1.13 million tonnes and 1.06 million tonnes registered a growth of 4 % and 3 % respectively.

The higher production levels got a further boost in July 12, with improved techno-economic parameters. Blast Furnace productivity, a critical parameter of production efficiency was up by 6 per cent over performance in July 11. Energy consumption was 3 per cent lower than the consumption in the same month last year.

Coke Rate was down by 1 per cent from the level in the same month last year.
