‘We are fully prepared to meet the rising national coal demand’
Western Coal Fields (WCF) Ltd is a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd which was set up in 1975. It operates 79 mines spread across 10 areas in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and also markets coal to a strong customer base comprising power, cement, steel, chemicals, fertilisers, paper factories in south, north and central India. The firm has set a goal to augment the coal production by 50% by FY 2019-20. Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, its chairman and managing director, has set a goal to create a conducive environment for implementing 36 projects with the active involvement of all stakeholders. Excerpts:
How prepared is WCF to meet the national coal demand?
We are prepared to carry out our share of the additional responsibility to meet the national coal demand. WCF is geared for producing 60 million tonnes (MT) in 2019-20. Timelines have been prepared for opening and implementing 36 projects with about 54 MT capacity, in a phased manner by 2019-20. Out of the three projects to be commissioned in 2014-15, one project has already been opened, the remaining are scheduled to be commissioned in January and March 2015. Further, 11 projects will be commissioned in 2015-16, 10 in 2016-17, 5 in 2017-18, 2 projects in 2018-19 and 5 projects in 2019-20.
How do you plan to leverage your strengths?
A committed and experienced workforce and favourable socio-political environment have been the strength of WCF. Despite challenging and adverse geo-mining conditions, we have set our vision of growth and could chart out plans within a very short span of three months, for almost doubling our volumes by FY 2019-20. We are now ready to meet the challenges of reaching the target of one billion tonne of coal by FY 2019-20.
How do you pay back to society through CSR?
WCF has been consistently taking up corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community development activities since inception. We have been spending over Rs 20 crore annually on these activities. We are constructing 3,631 toilets in 2,360 government schools in 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh under the Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan which are scheduled to be completed by April 2015. WCF has undertaken afforestation in 300 hectares through the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra.
What are your achievements in environment protection?
WCF has taken the work of environment protection very systematically through a proper three-tired organisation from the corporate to the unit level.
