BHEL in space with solar panels
Engineering PSU Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a milestone with the manufacture and supply of space grade solar panels to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for their first satellite export project for EADS-Astrium of Europe. The satellite, equipped with the BHEL-built solar panels, was successfully launched by the European Ariane-5 launch vehicle from French Guyana. The state-of-the-art communication satellite (W2M), carries 5 numbers BHEL-fabricated Solar Panels with high-efficiency Advanced Triple Junction Solar Cells, covering a cumulative area of 26.5 sq. m.
The Solar Panels are performing satisfactorily and ISRO has complimented BHEL for the successful fabrication and supply of these panels, as per their requirement. BHEL has had a long association with ISRO and has earlier supplied several Space Grade Solar Panels and Space Quality Batteries to ISRO for use in their satellites. These panels are used to charge the batteries and provide electricity for various systems in the satellites. While the Space Quality Batteries fabricated by BHEL for ISRO have been working satisfactorily in their CARTOSAT satellite, BHEL-supplied Space Grade Solar Panels are providing satisfactory service on INSAT 3A, INSAT 3E, GSAT 2, GSAT 3, IRSP 5 and EDUSAT satellites, now in orbit.
BHEL’s surface engineering expertise has also been used by ISRO, by way of application of non-corrosive coating on the secondary injection thrust vector control tanks of their Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and missions.
