‘Eco-restoration, CSR, growth tools for NCL’
T.K. Nag, CMD, NCL, says the company has planned to enhance coal output to 110 Million Tonnes (MT) By FY 2019-20
What has been the recent performance of NCL? How has the company performed in the first five months of the year?
Performance of NCL during first six months of 2015-16, in terms of important parameters is tabulated below :
What are your plans to enhance the production to the next level ?
By FY 2019-20, NCL has planned to enhance coal output to 110 Million Tonnes (MT) (approx.) as a part of 1BT production programme by CIL. Some of the steps envisaged to accomplish this task, are as follows:
(a) Expansion of existing Mega Projects viz. Jayant Open cast project (OCP) (to 20 Mtpa Cap), Dudhichua OCP (to 20 Mtpa), Block-B OCP (to 8 Mtpa).
(b) Enhancing production from Mega Projects like Amlohri OC (to 14 Mtpa), Nigahi (to 18.75 Mtpa) and Khadia OC (to 10 Mtpa), as per their sanctioned EC Capacity.
(c) Execution of Bina-Kari Amalgamation Project by reorganizing Kakri and Bina OCPs to form 10 Mtpa Project.
(d) Opening up new Projects viz. Semaria OCP (2 Mtpa) and two no. of UG Projects in Main Basin.
(e) Enhancement in Capacity of Existing CHPs and construction of New CHPs to take care of enhanced production.
(f) Establishment of Amlohri-Bargawan Rail link for faster evacuation of coal, etc.
NCL had plans to get into power production also. What is the present status?
Presently, no such programme exists.
What are the initiatives you have undertaken for environment management ?
NCL is one of the best environmentally managed coal producing companies. Effective steps have been taken to keep checks on Air Pollution, Land Pollution, Water Pollution and Noise Pollution in and around mining areas.
NCL is certified with ISO 14001:2004 (International standardization of Environment Management System), ISO 9001:2008 and OHSAS 18001:2007 for all mines, Hospitals and Central Workshop as an Integrated management System (IMS).
NCL is committed to restoration of landscape in the mined out areas to near original or better land use profile as far as possible. Towards this objective, technical and biological reclamation of OB dumps have been undertaken on a massive scale and is a continuous process. Reclamation works done on OB dumps in NCL is one of the best with bio-matting used in Mega projects like Jayant, Dudhichua and Nigahi OC. Vegetation cover over bare OB dumps have been provided in major projects. For maintaining vegetation cover water sprinklers are also deployed at specific points. The slope surface has been covered with mixture of grass seeds, agricultural soil and manure laid in coir/hay/straw/geo-textile-mat. It ensures stability of dump slopes and minimization of erosion due to wind and rain water.
There are 10 fully operational Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) with sufficient capacity of treatment (with about 50% extra treatment Capacity).
NCL has started transportation of coal from Krishnashila Project to Renusagar Power Division, through Belt Pipe Conveyor (BPC) System. NCL has become the first subsidiary of CIL starting coal transportation through BPC System. This is a major step of the company to achieve environmental excellence as nearly 700 trucks that were engaged in coal transportation will be phased out from the road after starting this state-of-the-art technology, which is completely pollution-free.
Since inception, total number of trees planted in NCL areas is more than 2.29 Crores, which is the highest in CIL. Per employee tree plantation is the highest in CIL i.e. 1375 trees per employee.
The Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) is monitored for all the mines on fortnightly basis and 98% (approx) of results indicate that AAQ is within norms.
In the last 4 years, based on data analysis, there is 3% reduction in Average SPM Values in NCL areas. This is mainly due to large scale tree plantation works undertaken by NCL together with pollution control measures taken like maintaining black topped roads, increasing the frequency of water sprinkling, etc.
There is an Integrated Water Supply System (IWSS) with 18 MGD Capacity water treatment plant for all mines/colonies of NCL. There is a programme to increase the capacity of IWSS to 26 MGD.
NCL has introduced Surface Miners in selected projects. It is an eco-friendly technology that eliminates blasting & crushing of coal and thereby obviates related environmental problems.
NCL has engaged FRI Dehradun for eco-restoration work on 5 Hectares of land each at Nigahi and Kishnashila Projects. This is aimed to create rich bio-diversity with 3-tier plantation, grassing with native and adaptive species etc. FRI has done study for eco-restoration also at Jhingurdah Project.
Procurement of Mobile Mist Spray dust control system is in process, that will mitigate air pollution issues in sidings, CHPs and coal transportation routes.
In addition to the above there are many other initiatives in NCL that are in pipeline for execution viz. Rain Water Harvesting, Solar Energy Utilization in Guest Houses, replacement of all incandescent lamps to CFL/LED, establishing Solar Energy Plant etc.
There is a program for development of a park around southern side of Mudwani dam.
