S. Rajagopal, the chief general manager (Mechanical) and the chief executive officer of NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), Thoothukudi, assumed office as director (Power) of NLC Limited on March 1, 2013. Govt. of India appointed him for the post, consequent to the superannuation of J. Mahilselvan.

A Mechanical Engineering Graduate from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, he completed college in the year 1977 and joined the NLC family on June 6, 1977. His career spans more than three decades of service in NLC, starting from junior level executive to chief general manager.

In the early years of his career, Rajagopal had worked in various capacities in Neyveli Lignite Mines. He was in-charge of erection, commissioning and rejuvenation of Specialised Mining Equipments and Conveyor Systems. He gained sufficient knowledge in Ground Water Control measures in open cast mines as the head of the Branch.

Between 1999 and 2002, he headed the Mine-IA project, with a capacity of three million tonnes of lignite per annum at Neyveli. He had put in sustained efforts to complete the project without any time and cost overrun. In recognition of this, the Mining, Geological, Metallurgical Institute of India presented the ‘Coal India Trophy for the year 2003-04’ to NLC.
Deservingly, he was elevated to the rank of general manager in February 2002 and chief general manager in January 2009. From January 2010, he was the chief general manager of Material Management Department. During this 20-month tenure, he was responsible for procurement of spares, consumables, plant and equipments etc. for the company as a whole.

He had been to foreign countries like Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, and China, in connection with his various assignments and gained expertise. Since October 2011, he was heading the NTPL, a Joint Venture Company of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) (formerly TNEB). This subsidiary company of NLC is taking up a 2x500 MW Coal based Thermal Power Project at Thoothukudi.

Head of NTPL, he has taken various steps to expedite the progress of works by his close monitoring. Due to his untiring effort, the first unit of the project is expected to be commissioned in December 2013 and the Second unit in March 2014. His good engineering skills and his vast exposure in almost all spheres of NLC will facilitate him to take NLC to further heights of glory.
