Coal India Limited (CIL) celebrated its 34th Foundation Day with gaiety and enthusiasm on November 1, 2009. The ocassion was celebrated with fervor and solemnity in all subsidiary companies of CIL. The celebration began with the unfurling of Coal India flag atop Coal Bhawan followed by the ceremonial rendering of CIL corporate song.

Partha S Bhattacharyya, chairman, CIL unfurled the flag in the company of S Bhattacharya, Director (Finance), NC Jha, Director (Technical), R Mohan Das, Director (Personnel & Industrial Relations), Dr AK Sarkar, Director (Marketing), NR Banerjee, Chief Vigilance Officer and employees of CIL. The past chairmen and directors of CIL also took active part in the event.

The next part of the morning session celebration was the third Kumaramangalam Memorial Lecture delivered by GL Tandon (former Chairman, CIL) at Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Present at the occasion were C Balakrishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises, MS Gujral (former Chairman, CIL,—the Guest of Honour; Chairman CIL and Functional Directors. It was heart warming to observe that the hall was filled to its capacity—an indication of the spontaneity evinced by employees in observing the memorable day.

At the outset a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect in memory of the supreme sacrifice of those mining brethren who laid down their lives in the pursuit of their noble profession. These martyrs have laid their lives in the service of the Nation. Before the commencement of the lecture the ceremonial lamp was lit by all the dignitaries who were present. Three generations of chairmen who over the years have painstakingly built an energy empire that made CIL what it is today—the single largest coal producing company in the world were moving around excitedly. After all, it was a befitting occasion to remember and recapitulate their toil and perseverance.

C Balakrishnan, Secretary (Coal) congratulated Chairman and Directors over the improved performance of CIL. He said, with the joy of celebrating the Foundation Day there should be a little bit of introspection. He lauded CIL from growing strength to strength and said it still has many miles to go in achieving the results expected of it.

He emphasised that Coal is the mainstay of India’s energy. Balakrishnan added that CIL made contribution to government through generous dividends. He said on momentous occasions like this there is need to take resolve to take CIL to greater heights.

Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary (DPE) appreciated CIL for winning the SCOPE excellence award amidst stringent selection parameters. Basically, he said the award reflects CIL’s excellence in management. Chatterjee pointed that DPE shortly introducing a new level of excellence status ‘Maharatna’ which is a notch above ‘Navratna’. Expectation is that very few select companies will make it to Maharatna category, he maintained. He said as and when CIL gets listed in the bourses it becomes eligible to be considered for Maharatna status. With its improved performance he was optimistic CIL will attain the treasured recognition.

Partha S Bhattacharyya, chairman, CIL has taken the audience through a brilliant power point presentation narrating the transformation of Coal India over the years, from its difficult incipient days to its present of strength. He specifically pointed out the concrete contributions of his predecessors. He highlighting the importance of Coal India stated that it is at the centre of India’s growth story. It also maintains the industrial harmony.

NC Jha, Director (Technical), delivered the welcome address and updated the audience on the performance of CIL in recent years and its achievements. Notable among them CIL bagging the coveted SCOPE Excellence Award 2007-08 in Institutional Category for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution in Public Sector Management. He said Coal India over the years had grown from strength to strength because of the predecessors who led the industry ably.

The evening function was basically awards presentation ceremony and a cultural festivity held at the imposing Science City Auditorium. It was graced by Sriprakash Jaiswal, Minister of State for Coal, Statistics & Proramme Implementation (Independent Charge), Kalyan Banerjee, MP & Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Power & Coal. All Functional Directors of CIL were present. Employees of CIL with their families attended the occasion. The hall was a beehive of cheerfulness and exuberance resounding with happiness.

Secretary (Coal) inaugurated Coal India’s Corporate web portal. The Portal comprises two distinct yet inter-woven sections: the first, the Corporate Website, contains information regarding Coal India for the reference of its external stakeholders, including investors, customers, media and the public; the second, the Employee Portal, contains information and applications for the exclusive use of Coal India employees. The contents are available in both English and Hindi wherever applicable.

On this occasion, CIL also released a 90 second audio-visual Corporate Geet showcasing CIL’s various activities—mining operations, social, environmental and CSR efforts, medical outreach programmes etc. in rhythm to a soothing tune. All the ex-Chairmen and Directors of CIL were honoured and remembered for their contribution to the coal industry with the presentation of a Shawl by the Minister.

KSR Chari, the doyen of Indian coal mining industry who is one of the shapers of organized coal sector was conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award. NC Jha read out a special citation in the honour of Chari. Chari could not be present due to his old age and Dr RN Sharma on his behalf received the award from Sriprakash Jaiswal. Institutional Awards were presented to different coal companies for outstanding performance in various categories like Corporate Performance Award; Bravery Award; Innovation Award; Individual Excellence Award and Best Drilling Camp of CMPDI Award. The Minister presented these awards.

Sriprakash Jaiswal while addressing the audience highlighted the importance of coal sector in the country’s growth and the specific role of Coal India in fulfilling the energy needs of the Indian Industry. The Minister said Coal India should take this role seriously and work towards the all round development of the country.

Jaiswal emphasised that the safety and security of miners is foremost concern and utmost diligence will be paid in the regard. The evening was enlivened with tunes of Dr Ashok Chatterjee, Medical Superintendent, Kalla Hospital ECL and Smt Prema Toppo, Dy Medical Superintendent, Koyla Nagar Hospital, BCCL—members of Coal India family. There was also drama presentation by BCCL troupe. The cultural evening culminated with a scintillating performance of Smt Sudha Chandran who enthralled the audience.
