The new furnace is being installed as part of BSP's 7 million tonne expansion & modernisation programme

A major milestone has been achieved in the important project for installation of the modern Blast Furnace # 8 in Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of Steel Authority of India with the completion of the mass-concreting of the 3-metre-high third and final layer of the proper foundation of the furnace. The new furnace, being installed as part of BSP’s 7 million tonne Expansion & Modernisation Programme, will be BSP’s biggest blast furnace having useful volume of 4,060 m3 and capacity of 2.8 million tonnes per annum.

Special heat-resistant concrete mixture has been used for mass concreting of approx. 720 cu.m. over an area of 17.35 metre diameter. The mass-concreting was completed under the supervision of officers from Blast Furnace Zone of BSP’s Projects Dept, led by SB Jagdale, GM (Projects-Iron) and AG Vaidya, DGM I/c BF Zone.

With this, the civil work for BF-8’s Proper Foundation is now complete, and the project is now ready for the next stage of erection of the furnace shell.

As many as 96 pipe-inserts for under-hearth cooling of the furnace and 52 foundation bolt-boxes for fixing the furnace shell that will be placed on top of the foundation have been specially cast along with the concreting. Special equipment, including a boom placer for continuous mass-concreting, vibrating machines, millers, batching plants, etc., had been pressed into service for the concreting work.

The job of mass-concreting of BF-8’s Proper Foundation area had started on 16th May 2011. The first layer of concreting of the 3-metre-high Proper Foundation involved continuous pouring of approximately 4,000 cubic metre of concrete within a span of four days. Mass-concreting of the 2.13-metre-high second layer of the Furnace Foundation was completed on 23rd June 2011. Concreting of such huge volume was taken up for first time in the current Modernization & Expansion of BSP.

A total of 580 metric tonnes of reinforcement have been used for the furnace proper foundation. The contract for installation of BF-8 in Bhilai Steel Plant had been awarded to a consortium of PWIT, PWIN & M/s L&T.
